Description (or HER record listing)

This is the site of the Hospital Pit both owned and operated by the Delaval family. It was sunk to the rich coal underground levels called 'seams' of the area before 1745. However, it is unknown when this colliery was worked. The site appears unrecognised in the 1860s by the Ordnance Survey mapping of the area. There were many small, almost bell pit, mines in this area of the county owned by the Delavals.
