A series of small coal extraction pits were operated here in the Post Medieval period. It is likely that these (at least) four pits were operated in either the 18th or 19th centuries. By the time of the first edition Ordnance Survey mapping of the area in 1856 this were described as "Old" so presumably they were disused.
