Description (or HER record listing)

A series of coal-mining pits were excavated here in the 19th century to extract the Cooper Eye Seam coal. One of the three shafts which are recorded in documents was an air shaft which would have allowed air circulation. In this coalfield ventilation was not the main problem. However, against this fact it needs to be borne in mind that the seams were often thin - but numerous - in this area.
