Description (or HER record listing)

This is the site of a shaft and mound noted in early mapping. Though no details are given in first edition Ordnance Survey mapping of this it is likely the remains of a small Post Medieval bellpit for coal. The mound would have been formed as a spoil heap for it was not economic to move this away, by whatever means, for such a small project. The coal seams are likely to be very near the surface here.
