Description (or HER record listing)

South of Housesteads Roman fort is a line of four small coal pits. They are probably late 18th or early 19th century in date, dug by prospectors in an attempt to find coal - perhaps for the production of agricultural lime. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
