Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - A coal shaft was located fairly close to Farnacres Colliery at Gateshead. It was abandoned by the 1850s, but lied in situ until the 40s. Industrial workings destroyed the shaft around this date leaving no trace, but it can be seen on aerial images from 1945.

Ordnance Survey, 1862

The shaft can be seen in the centre of the image near the railway lines. Source: Historic England Archive (RAF photography) Historic England Photograph: raf_106g_uk_1051_v_5031 flown 03/12/1945
