Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - Lumley West Pit was situated just south of Great Lumley, and was connected to the Lumley Waggonway branch leading directly to the village. The land was owned by the Earl & Countess of Durham in the 1840s and leased to a Mr John Taylor alongside a couple of other pits shown on the tithe maps of that year. It was situated next to a series of 3 allotment gardens and a pit pond, though ground level facilities were sparse excluding a single construction. This may imply it was recently opened like the 9th pit in 1841.
It seldom developed. Even by 1857 the featured were the same bar a larger heap and further allotment gardens. It appears this may have been a supporting pit or used for ventilation and secondary access. By the 1890s only a pit row of 4 cottages and the shaft itself survived. The waggonway however persisted and probably led to a coal depot or a makeshift station for pitmen to reach work.
There is no trace today.
