Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - The 3rd Brusselton Colliery was situated on Dere Street, the Roman Road when it intersected with Brusselton Lane. It opened around the 1920s under the ownership of the Brusselton Colliery Co., and connected 3 separate shafts - a central colliery with 2 drifts forming a wide radius connected by tramways.
It never made use of a railway connection directly at the site. Instead, the working had its own aerial tramway system, transporting tubs along a cable over High West Thickley to a gantry at Brusselton. From there it would drop into wagons and fall into the sidings at Shildon Wagon Works for onwards transport. I suppose this was regarded as a more cost effective system, especially when the Brusselton Incline was regarded as a shunting siding from this point. By the 60s however, it appears road transport was used given the lanes were upgraded substantially from decades prior on the mid 20th century mapping.
The site is now open land.
