Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A coal shaft is illustrated on the 1862 Ordnance Survey map at this location. No further context is given apart from the shaft noted as 'old', which indicates it operated in the first half of the 19th century. It is one of the many old coal shafts around the Causey Arch and surrounding woods.

This shaft was still extant into the 1930s. Aerial imagery from the 1940s appears to show the shaft to the left of the path, however the quality is quite low to properly confirm.
