Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - Chance Pit was located on the Byker Waggonway, which led up to Byker Hill and Walker on its original route. This was one of two adjacent pits - the other being the Virgin Pit. It is shown on William Donkin's map of 1767, produced for Sir Henry Lawson.

Though the site is approximate, it appears to be at the refuse site given the field boundaries existing on both 18th century and 19th century maps.
