Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - The Brusselton Tower Drift was a privately owned venture even though the nationalisation days, with the NCB leasing it to a Mr Walter Johnson and Mr George Jackson in the 50s and 60s.
It opened in the mid 20s and was an interesting working, presumably making use of the century old coal workings from the 1st Brusselton Colliery in the area. The main site was situated next to the old Brusselton Quarry, and had a tramway leading across Brusselton Wood into a north mine near Brusselton Farm. There was also another mine eastwards that appears to be connected underground.
The pit only ever had tops 30 people working for it - a modest enterprise but profitable if remained at the right scale. The site also had an electric fan above ground to ventilate the workings.
Nothing remains except a visible boundary in the main south complex. We can only presume there's remnants across the woods of both the tramway and the drifts, however it's impossible to see from aerial photography.
