Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - An isolated drift mine can be seen on the 1890s Ordnance Survey maps on the west edge of Hellhole Wood. There is a good chance it was connected to Beamish Colliery at one of a number of their pits. The drift is located next to a footpath trailing through the wood, though has no rail or road connection. As a result, it may have been emergency access or ventilation.
