Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A small coal pit named 'Ice Pit' could be found between Beamish Colliery Air Pit and Second Pit in the latter half of the 19th century. There is little known about this small working, though it closed by the 1890s as it was simply illustrated as a disused coal shaft. It was connected to a waggonway pre-1860s to Hedley's Colliery nr South Tanfield. This had been lifted by the time of the first OS map in 1857.
