Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A coal shaft was situated in a field between Backsandsides and Burnshouse Lane between the 1880s and 1920s, and predates Brusselton Colliery (Ladysmith Colliery).

It was already labelled as old on the 1890s maps, so was presumably only in use for a short period around the 1880s. It featured two buildings close to the shaft, though the maps do not give an indication of their use.

The shaft has been filled in or capped these days, and there is no trade above ground.

The shaft was location here. There is little visible earthwork. Taken in July 2024
