Description (or HER record listing)
The limeworks at the village of Ancroft featured its own coal pit to facilitate on-site burning of quarried lime. This lime would be in turn used for fertilisers, paints and all sorts of other purposes in this kind of rural area.
The pit itself was on the north side of the complex, looking over the main lane west to the Jingling bridge. The quarry alongside the rest of the village was owned by Earl Grey and featured kilns, an engine for pumping, and drawing stones to the kiln as per the Northumberland Name Books. It was certainly in use in the mid 19th century, but was disused by the 1890s. Scars of the quarry site can still be seen, though the coal pit has been redeveloped with housing built over.
