Description (or HER record listing)

Bagnall Colliery, otherwise known as Axwell Colliery, was a short lived working on the bank of the Derwent Valley between the 1870s and 1880s. Throughout it was owned by the Bagnall family, and had 2 shafts opened at the site. The complex was relatively small, with a terrace of around 6 cottages and a round 6 ground level buildings huddled around the main shaft and heap on the north end. It was connected by a waggonway, which was likely rope hauled down to the Derwent Valley Railway. Coals were likely transferred to mainline waggons from here.

Little exists today apart from the earthworks of the railway and the wooded boundary of the colliery site as seen below.
