Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - Edith Pit was a second pit operated by Swalwell Colliery from the 1880s until the 1900s. It was a modest operation, taking up a small patch of land behind the school on Market Lane and was likely secondary access to the Henry Pit working.
It was not connected by rail above, and was accessed by a footpath from Market Lane. The site however succumbed to the demand for residential housing at the turn of the century, and became a yard swallowed up by the terraces. It remains a light industrial yard.
