Description (or HER record listing)

Coal Pit, marked as Old on the 1st edition OS mapping so probably out of use by 1858. This is possibly the site of Fatfield Colliery, which opened before 1767. There were several disasters - on 18 August 1708 an explosion killed 69 people. Another in 1763 killed 39 miners. On 17 March 1767 another 39 people were killed, and another 11 on 3 July 1825.
