HER Description

NEHL - Quoits matches were held at the Market Lane Hotel grounds during the 1860s.

A newspaper piece from the Newcastle Journal, 18/07/1868 describes the final heats of the Auld Queer Uns quoit handicap were concluded here. The Quoits ground was the usual length of 11 yards but could be extended an additional 12 ft with clay ends. There was considerable room for spectators which is "satisfactory to the many gentlemen who daily patronise Mr Cairns, the proprietor".

The matches were certainly played outside, as "owing to darkness" the above match had to be discontinued, so was likely in the back yard before further development ensued. Though yards can be seen on the 1890s map, it is likely the space had been built on where they played.

The inn had opened in the 1850s, so it may be possible the Quoits ground extends to this decade.
