NEHL - The first recorded cricket match in Tyne and Wear was played at Redheugh Haughs (haughs being a stretch of riverside meadow) in 1753. A piece from the Newcastle Journal of 23/06/1753 states "Last week a great Cricket match that has been for some time depending, between the Gentlemen of Gateshead and those of Newcastle was played on the Haughs nigh the Redheugh, and won with great ease by the former".

The piece above would indicate a short history of the sport beforehand, but there is no recorded evidence. It is difficult to ascertain where exactly the field was, but if we take into consideration the topography of the area I would consider it being the Tynemouth Pass area just east of Dunston Staiths.
