HER Description

NEHL - A quoits ground was developed in the yard of the Ship Inn from at least the 1880s. This can be first evidenced in a Newcastle Chronicle piece from 1888, when a £25 handicap was resumed between J Wood of Ouseburn and Mason of Walker "were the contestants [after] one of the most excited games ever decided on the above ground". Mason won by 1 point.

The yard stood directly behind the inn via a narrow snicket/passageway. The area has been entirely redeveloped with none of the original buildings of the terrace still standing.

The rear yard of the Ship Inn can be seen here in 1910. It's likely the Quoits ground was just to the right through an entranceway. Unknown source.
