Chester le Street CC

HER Description

NEHL - Chester le Street CC have played on this ground since the mid 19th century after various moves in the locality. At first the facilities were primitive, just being an open field likely leased to them. This remained the same until more considerable facilities became apparent by the 1910s, where a pavilion was constructed on the western side of the ground. A Roman bottle was also found at the ground.

Field days were also held at the ground, such as a carnival in 1918 ran by the Chester le Street Welcome Home Fund for soldiers returning from war. a gymnastic display was held by the Wellesley Training Ship Boys Band (the ship was found on the Tyne), a £6 Quoits tournament, a Horse parade and a presentation by an escaped prisoner of war.
