Still flowing in the centre of the village.

Sandstone wellhead set into a rubble stone wall, with the legend "Alice Well Rebuilt 1895" carved into the ashlar surround. Until 1939 this was the village's only fresh water supply. It was recently repaired.

Listing Description (if available)

Wellhead. Dated 1885. Sandstone. Round-headed opening in retaining wall to side of footpath. Historical note: until 1939 the only supply of fresh water in Cox Green.

Ordnance Survey, 1898 and 1951. The well is not visible on both maps, but is just below the letter 'A' in Wear on the earlier version. The chalybeate spring supplied fresh water to the whole of the village until just a decade before the second map was published. As noted, the village of Cox Green changed minimally throughout the first half of the 20th century, and much of the industry lay in situ.

Alice Well in January 2022. The well still leaks fresh water, hence the amount of rust. The inscription can be seen in the arch above the well, noting when it was refurbished in the late 19th century.
