NEHL - This shaft is one of the many that stood disused by the middle of the 19th century in Horsley Wood. There was at least half a dozen in the wood which were likely all connected underground, and perhaps connected to the larger collieries at Wylam. Most are illustrated as 'old' by the survey at the end of the 1850s, so there is a chance they opened in the 18th century. At least one was opened later in the early 20th century as Horsley Wood Colliery.
