Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A coal shaft was located just off Association Street at Shildon in the latter half of the 19th century, and closed by the 1890s.

Little is known about this shaft as it was not recorded on maps from the 1850s. It may have been ventilation or a smaller enterprise in the north east of the town. Either way, it didn't last long as the shaft was abandoned by the end of the century. It had been covered over by the 1910s, with allotments and terraced housing gardens occupying the site. Nothing can be seen of the shaft today.
