This is the site of a coal shaft. It is likely that this was a smallĀ bell pitĀ or ventilation shaft. These shafts could be interchangeable - of access shafts were frequently maintained as air shafts. This allowed the ventilation of the workings without the buildup of the dangerous gas methane.
