Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - At least two coal shafts are recorded on this site, visible on both the 1850s Ordnance Survey maps and the Coal Authority, where at least two shafts are illustrated. It is possible the football ground immediately south was part of the working, as maps through to the 1890s illustrate a marshy overgrown area which may indicate disused or spoiled land.

Nowadays, there is still a small area of overgrown land between the field and the football ground, however it is difficult to gauge if there any remains.

The coal shafts are in the overgrown area on the south of this photo from February 2023.
