Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A coal level was located immediately north of Howdean Bridge west of Wylam. It is not illustrated on the 1864 map, therefore we can surmise this level was only operational in the second half of the 19th century. It was unconnected by rail, so may have been a secondary shaft for another larger one. There was a huge amount of coal pits and shafts in this area and may have been connected to these.
