Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - A coal shaft stood close to Hole Lane nr Whickham through the 19th century. Unfortunately it is not known who sunk this shaft or when, and is shown as 'old' as early as the 1850s. When considering the other shafts nearby also, there is a chance there was a working here pre-1850s. There is also a pond adjacent to the shaft, which may be related.
There is still mild land discolouration where the shaft stood, indicating the capped shaft may still be in situ.
