Description (or HER record listing)

Extensive open cast coal mines at Shotton and North Shotton are visible as earthworks on air photos. This activity has covered most parts of the area bound by the River Blyth, the A1, the railway line and Fisher Lane. The exceptions being a triangle of fields around Shotton Farm. This activity had begun in some parts on the earliest air photos and the latest air photos show that it continued in 2016
